Beginning August 1, 2026, you must complete a firearms safety course before purchasing or transferring what is being called a "Specified Semiautomatic Firearm (SSF)". An SSF is defined as a semiautomatic rifle or shotgun with a detachable magazine OR a gas-operated semiautomatic handgun with a detachable magazine. Apparently, our Department of Revenue (DOR) is supposed to provide a list of firearms that fall into this category. We are still trying to find that list. 

     This law only affects people who will purchase and transfer an SSF after August 1, 2026. Those who are in possession of one prior to August 1, 2026 are grandfathered in and do not need the class.

     In order for you to legally purchase one of these items after Aug 1, 2026. You MUST complete a Firearm Safety Course provided by a Certified Firearms Instructor. This will be regulated by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department. As of the 1st. of May 2026, the CPW has not provided any specific curriculum requirements for this class. There are however, dates for "Train the Trainer" events held either virtually or in-person. We at Civil Defense will keep you informed as we learn more. We will be offering this safety course but until the actual class material and requirements are put out by CPW. We all are in a holding pattern.
